INVITATION AND CALL FOR PAPERS “Toponymy and Cartography between History and Geography”

The Romano-Hellenic Division (RHD) of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) announces its second International Scientific Symposium “Toponymy and Cartography between History and Geography” that will be held in Venezia [Venice] – Italia (venue: Istituto Veneto di Scienze Lettere e Arti, Campo Santo Stefano, 2945), in conjunction with its next divisional meeting.
The International Scientific Symposium will be organized by the Italian Geographic Military Institute, in close cooperation with the Regional Government of Veneto and the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere e Arti.
The event aims to activate an interdisciplinary scientific comparison between experts (geographers, linguists, historians, planners, cartographers) on the following topics:
– Historical maps and toponymy;
– Geographical names and identity;
– Geographical names and linguistic minorities;
– Vernacular place names;
– Etymological studies;
– Preservation of the toponymic heritage;
– Modern maps, Geographic Information Systems and toponymy;
– State of the art in the national and international standardization of geographical names.
Experts of the UNGEGN-RHD are cordially invited to participate in the Simposium and the Meeting.
Experts and scholars who are interested in presenting papers or attending the Symposium are kindly invited to fill out and send the attached registration form.
