I catasti come fonte storica sul terrazzamento. Una guida per l’indagine territoriale nel lombardo-veneto

Abstract

I risultati emersi dall’utilizzo del Catasto lombardo-veneto in un precedente studio sul terrazzamento lariano (Bonardi, Mastrovito, 2019) hanno stimolato la necessità di un ampliamento delle ricerche sul tema ad altre aree vicine, per contestualizzarne i risultati e verificarne le intuizioni. Le specificità della fonte su cui si costruisce il lavoro di studio e la varietà delle situazioni riscontrabili hanno però suggerito di anteporre ad ulteriori ricostruzioni storicoterritoriali un contributo di ordine metodologico, indispensabile anche per restituire più esattamente potenzialità e limiti dello strumento di indagine adottato. Si è tentato quindi di realizzare una guida per orientarsi nelle pieghe di questa inesauribile fonte storica, attraverso la presentazione dei documenti principalmente utili per simili ricerche. La Valchiavenna – all’epoca del catasto distretto della provincia di Valtellina – ha fatto da caso studio ideale sul quale verificare quanto teorizzato, considerando la sua maggiore problematicità rispetto ad altre aree censite dallo stesso catasto. In virtù delle sue specifiche caratteristiche, è stato inoltre possibile mettere a punto due possibili letture dei dati estraibili, potenzialmente applicabili nella risoluzione di questioni diverse ancora aperte.

Through the Larian case-study, Lombardo-Venetian Cadastre showed prospective possibility of historic terracing research and current limits of knowledge. The enlargement of that approach to other areas suggested developing a short methodological contribution, helpful to whoever it was interested by this work. Lombardo-Venetian Cadastre as landscape historical source introduces a number of issues to be solved before any further territorial study. We have tried to outline the foundations of the survey by identifying the most important steps of its drafting and the most useful documents. Then, we investigated the District of Chiavenna (in the historic Province of Valtellina), which presented some specific problems, more complex to solve than other areas. The solutions identified have opened new research perspectives, which can be applied elsewhere in the future, and they offered new suggestions. We hope that this contribution, as well as laying the groundwork for any other more in-depth local investigation, it will represent the starting point to extend the study to other historical cadastre.
