L’articolazione territoriale degli insediamenti templari nella Puglia medievale: un approccio spaziale con il GIS

Abstract

L’ARTICOLAZIONE TERRITORIALE DEGLI INSEDIAMENTI TEMPLARI NELLA PUGLIA MEDIEVALE: UN APPROCCIO SPAZIALE CON IL GIS – La Puglia fu una delle aree del Mezzogiorno italiano a ospitare una presenza importante dell’Ordine templare, anche grazie a una discreta documentazione datata tra XII e XIV secolo. Si è esaminato il ruolo svolto dai fattori geografici nelle scelte insediative dei Templari in questa regione avvalendosi del GIS. Dall’analisi è emerso come il pattern degli stanziamenti e delle proprietà templari seguì una logica ben precisa e affatto casuale, legata allo sfruttamento delle fertili pianure del Tavoliere e all’utilizzo delle strutture portuali. È stato possibile individuare cinque cluster territoriali nei quali collocare i possedimenti templari.

THE TERRITORIAL STRUCTURE OF TEMPLAR SETTLEMENTS IN MEDIEVAL APULIA: A SPATIAL APPROACH USING GIS – Apulia was one of the areas of Southern Italy hosting an important presence of the Templar Order, also thanks to a fair amount of documentation datated between the 12^th and 14^th centuries. This contribution aims to examine the role played by geographical factors in the settlement strategies of the Templars in this region using GIS. The analysis revealed how the pattern of Templar commanderies and properties followed a very precise logic and not a completely random one, linked to the exploitation of the fertile plains of the Tavoliere and the use of the harbor structures. It was possible to identify five territorial clusters in which place the Templar possessions.
