L’esposizione colombiana del 1892 sul Bisagno a Genova

Abstract

Nel 1892 Genova ospitò una Esposizione italo-americana artistico-industriale-commerciale per il quarto centenario colombiano. L’evento può essere contestualizzato in un preciso periodo storico e in una precisa situazione geografica. Gli studiosi (e in minor misura anche i geografi) concentrarono i loro studi sulla storia delle esplorazioni. I socialisti approfittarono degli sconti sui trasporti per organizzare il primo congresso nazionale. Genova fu oggetto di importanti interventi urbanistici che modificarono l’aspetto fisico e anche l’identità morale della città. L’esposizione fu allestita sul letto del torrente Bisagno, in una struttura temporanea che poi fu travolta da una disastrosa alluvione.

The Colombian Exposition of Genoa in 1892, near the Bisagno Stream. - In 1892, for the fourth centenary of the America’s discovery, Genoa hosted an Italo-American exposition, focused on artistic and industrial-commercial issues. The event can be contextualized in a particular historical period and in a specific geographical location. In those times, scholars from different specializations (even the geographers) concentrated their studies on the history of exploration. The Socialists took advantage of discounts on transport to organize their first national congress. Genoa was subjected to major urban developments that altered the physical aspect and also the moral identity of the city. The exhibition was set up onto the stream bed of the Bisagno torrent, in a temporary structure which was then overwhelmed by a disastrous flood.
