Geografia e politica in Italia tra Otto e Novecento. Cesare Battisti e i suoi scritti nella produzione geografica e nella storia del pensiero geografico

Abstract

Lo scritto intende dare risposta ai quesiti posti da Elena Dai Prà in previsione della giornata di studi roveretana dedicata a Cesare Battisti e alla geografia fra Otto e Novecento: partendo dalla considerazione della figura scientifica di Battisti e dai suoi stretti rapporti sia con il resto della geografia italiana ed europea e sia con molte altre discipline delle aree naturalistiche e storico-sociali, non solo d’Italia: e ciò, grazie anche alla continua collaborazione con il fraterno amico Giovan Battista Trener. Vengono poi esaminati i complessi rapporti tra la geografia italiana (istituzionalizzata nelle università e nella società geografica nazionale a partire dagli anni ‘60 del XIX secolo) e il potere politico statale, con la parziale politicizzazione dei contenuti della produzione geografica tra Otto e Novecento, funzionali all’espansione politico-militare ed economica italiana nelle regioni irredente, nelle aree adriatiche-balcaniche e mediterranee-orientali, in Africa, piuttosto che alla risoluzione dei tanti e gravi problemi ambientali, economici, sociali e amministrativi del nostro paese. Viene infine affrontata la mancata considerazione, da parte della geografia italiana – fino alla seconda guerra mondiale e al dopoguerra –, delle opere geografiche più originali di Battisti, ovvero dei modelli delle monografie regionali e delle cartografie tematiche messi a punto per il Trentino, con moderna metodologia interdisciplinare.

The paper intends to answer the questions posed by Elena Dai Prà in anticipation of the convention in Rovereto (May 2018) dedicated to Cesare Battisti and to geography between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The study starts from the consideration of the scientific figure of Battisti and its close relations both with the rest of the Italian and European geography and with many other disciplines of the naturalistic and historical-social areas, not only of Italy: and this, thanks also to the continuous collaboration with the fraternal friend Giovan Battista Trener. The paper then examines the complex relationships between Italian geography (institutionalized in universities and in the national geographic society since the 60s of the nineteenth century) and the state political power, with the partial politicization of the contents of the geographical production between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This production was functional to the Italian political-military and economic expansion in the irredent regions, in the AdriaticBalkan and Mediterranean-Eastern areas, in Africa, rather than to the resolution of the many serious environmental, economic, social and administrative problems of our country. Finally, the study investigates the non-consideration of the most original geographical works of Battisti by the Italian geography, at least until the Second World War and after the war; these are the models of the regional monographs and the thematic cartography developed for Trentino, with a modern interdisciplinary methodology.
