The African Colonial Dream: L’Etat Indépendant du Congo and the mission scientifique of Charles Lemaire

Abstract

La ricostruzione delle vicende che portarono alla formazione nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento dell’État Indépendant du Congo costituiscono il prologo all’esplorazione della regione del Katanga, la cui appartenenza al regno indipendente di Leopoldo II era argomento di discussione sul piano internazionale. In questo contesto si colloca la ancora poco nota mission scientifique guidata dal belga Charles Lemaire su incarico di Leopoldo II. Il ricco materiale prodotto in questa occasione, conservato presso il Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) di Tervuren, fornisce lo spunto per un primo esame di parte del tragitto percorso da questa spedizione. In particolare, l’analisi di alcuni schizzi cartografici così come delle informazioni raccolte da Lemaire e dai suoi compagni consentono il confronto con prodotti analoghi elaborati da altri esploratori, la cui contestazione dell’esattezza spesso si confondeva con la competizione allora esistente sul piano della politica internazionale.

THE AFRICAN COLONIAL DREAM: L’ÉTAT INDÉPENDANT DU CONGO AND THE MISSION SCIENTIFIQUE OF CHARLES LEMAIRE ‒ The reconstruction of the events that led to the formation of the État indépendant du Congo in the second half of the 19th century serves as a prologue to the exploration of the Katanga region, whose inclusion in the independent kingdom of Leopold II was a topic of international debate. In this context lies the still relatively little-known mission scientifique led by the Belgian Charles Lemaire on behalf of Leopold II. The extensive material produced during this expedition, preserved at the Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) in Tervuren, provides the basis for a preliminary examination of a part of the itinerary of the expedition. Specifically, the analysis of certain cartographic sketches, as well as the information gathered by Lemaire and his companions, allows for a comparison with similar works created by other explorers, whose challenges to the accuracy of these findings were often intertwined with the international political competition of the time.
