The Laboratory “Geographic Information System for the Organization of the Territory”: a Pathway Linked to Education, Research and the Third Mission
Abstract
Il Laboratorio “Sistemi informativi geografici per l’organizzazione del territorio” (SIGOT) è l’erede del Laboratorio di Cartografia fondato nel 1982 da Mario Cataudella che ne assunse la direzione presso l’allora Istituto di Geografia dell’Università di Salerno. All’epoca, presso la struttura, già dotata di un tecnico disegnatore, venivano realizzate cartografie tematiche di supporto alla ricerca geografica.
Nel 1988 l’Università si spostò da Salerno a Fisciano dove fu organizzata in forma di Campus. Il Laboratorio di Cartografia fu trasferito nel nuovo complesso e, nel 1992, cambiò denominazione acquisendo quella attuale. Mario Cataudella rimase alla direzione fino al 2004, anno in cui gli subentrò Mariagiovanna Riitano che lo incardinò nel Dipartimento di Scienze del Patrimonio culturale, dove ancora oggi opera con una buona dotazione di personale tecnico specializzato e attrezzature idonee alla realizzazione di cartografie tematiche alle diverse scale e di Sistemi informativi geografici. Dalla fine de 2018, la direzione del Laboratorio è stata assunta da Teresa Amodio.
Il Laboratorio SIGOT, nei quasi quarant’anni di attività, ha costituito un importante strumento di supporto alla ricerca oltre ad aver consentito, fin dagli anni Novanta, ai geografi a esso afferenti di avviare e consolidare rapporti di collaborazione sia con enti pubblici e privati sia con soggetti terzi interessati alle competenze presenti nella struttura.
The Laboratory “Geographical Information Systems for Organization of the Territory” (SIGOT) origins from the Laboratory of Cartography, established within the Institute of Geography of the University of Salerno, founded in 1982 by Mario Cataudella who directed it for many years. At the time, the Laboratory, already equipped with a technician, was aimed to realize thematic cartographies to support geographical research.
In 1988, the University of Salerno moved from the city of Salerno to Fisciano where it was organized in the form of a Campus. The Cartography Laboratory moved too in the new Campus and, in 1992, changed its name to the current one. Mario Cataudella remained in charge of the direction until 2004, when he was succeeded by Mariagiovanna Riitano, who transferred it within the Department of Cultural Heritage. Nowadays, it is still within the same Department and is equipped with specialized technicians and equipment suitable for the creation of thematic cartographies at different scales and Geographic Information Systems. From the end of the year 2018, the direction of the Laboratory has been taken by Teresa Amodio.
In its almost forty years of activity, the SIGOT Laboratory has significantly supported geographical research and it has contributed to stimulate and consolidate collaborations with both public and private bodies and other stakeholders interested in its competencies and activities.
